Gyu roo gi, or sparring, is a method of practicing defense and counter-attack techniques with fellow students. Practicing with a partner enables us to test the skills we have learned, and to learn how to vary the techniques we use as we assess the changing situation. Done properly, sparring can be extremely fun and exhilarating. Sparring also can be a great confidence builder.
We practice sparring with full protective gear: head and chest protectors, forearm and shin guards, a mouthpiece, and for men and boys, a padded athletic cup.
Students demonstrate sparring abilities at all belt levels beyond the most basic beginner.
