In addition to learning fighting skills and studying educational topics, the warrior corps that were so instrumental in systematizing and passing down the techniques that led to today’s tae kwon do were trained in ethics, morals, and philosophy. Buddhist and Confucian beliefs about proper living were influential in shaping their code of conduct. The values they lived by focused on loyalty to country, obedience to parents, trustworthiness, bravery, and justice – all qualities we still admire today.
The belief remains that virtuous character is necessary to guide every person through life, perhaps especially a person trained in fighting techniques. As time has passed, tae kwon do masters have remained committed to teaching principles that build strong characters, as well as skills that build strong bodies. Though the principles and rules taught in each school may not be worded exactly alike, they are sure to result from, and teach, core values such as respect of self and others, humility, perseverance, self-discipline, and honesty.
