The tae kwon do poomse is a patterned form, which includes techniques of block and attack in a sequence, moving in certain directions. There are a series of forms from beginner without belt up to advanced black belt. First, we learn the steps and techniques for our form. Then we practice repeatedly to build speed. Next, we learn to stop instantly between techniques, maintaining balance without shaking. As we learn each form, we continue to practice them all over and over, always striving for improvement. As we advance through the belt levels, we help less-advanced students learn their forms.
Forms are an important part of tae kwon do training, and we cannot ignore them. Through constant practice, we learn and improve our performance of basic moves, and develop body balance and coordination. We build independence as we learn enough to practice without constant guidance.
Some people think that sparring is more important than forms. Both are essential, just as some days there is bright sunshine for group outdoor activities, and some days there is rain for quiet indoor activities on our own. Without forms, there cannot be tae kwon do.
At Fox Mill Tae Kwon Do, we learn twelve forms before attaining black belt status. The first four of these have been developed by Master Tak for his students. The next eight, as well as forms learned as a black belt, are shared by all students affiliated with the World Tae Kwon Do Federation, which teaches tae kwon do as it is performed in Olympic competition.
