There are many reasons why breaking, or kyuk pah, is important. Practicing breaking techniques helps us develop speed, power, accuracy, and balance. We cannot test the techniques we have learned by kicking, punching, or chopping at a friend’s face, so we practice breaking techniques using boards. By doing so, we can see our own progress and steadily build our self-confidence.
At each belt level test, students break a board using a different kick. Students’ ability to break boards always impresses their family and friends, and demonstrates the strength and mental focus that are integral parts of tae kwon do.
