Belts symbolize growth in skills in the martial arts. Historically, the first belts were functional parts of the clothing of martial arts practitioners. Over time, the belts became dirty; thus, a darker belt usually indicated a more advanced student or master. From this comes our current custom of awarding black belts to the most advanced students.
Though different schools have somewhat differing numbers and colors of belts, each school awards belts after students demonstrate, through periodic testing, that they have acquired new knowledge and skills. When you visit our school, you will see on the wall the various colors of belts we award. You will also find a chart, telling you which belts represent beginners, intermediate students, and advanced students.
